What Is Wegovy?
Wegovy is the brand name for semaglutide, a medication developed by Novo Nordisk. It’s a GLP-1 receptor agonist, originally created to treat type 2 diabetes (as Ozempic) but later approved by the FDA for chronic weight management in adults with obesity or overweight with at least one weight-related condition.
How it works: Semaglutide mimics a hormone called GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1), which regulates appetite and foodintake. It slows gastric emptying, reduces hunger, and helps users feel full sooner and longer.
What Is Mounjaro?
Mounjaro, on the other hand, is the brand name for tirzepatide, a newer drug developed by Eli Lilly. It’s unique because it targets two hormones: GLP-1 and GIP (glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide).
Mounjaro is currently approved for type 2 diabetes, but it has shown remarkable weight loss benefits in clinical trials and was FDA-approved in late 2023 under the name Zepbound for weight loss specifically. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) recommended Mounjaro for weight loss in December 2024.
