About the Treatment

What is Ostenil Plus?

A naturally-derived hyaluronic acid solution that helps restore joint lubrication and ease the pain of osteoarthritis.

Ostenil Plus is a hyaluronic acid solution used in the management of osteoarthritis. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance and a key component of synovial fluid — the lubricant that fills synovial joints such as the knee, shoulder and hip. It cushions movement, acts as a shock absorber, and helps clear the cells and substances that contribute to cartilage breakdown.

In the body, hyaluronic acid is constantly broken down and replaced. When this balance is disrupted, cartilage gradually wears away and osteoarthritis develops. By delivering pure hyaluronic acid directly into the affected joint, Ostenil Plus helps re-establish that balance — improving joint function and reducing pain, stiffness and swelling over time.

Conditions Treated

Where Ostenil Plus can help

There is strong clinical evidence for the use of Ostenil Plus in osteoarthritis of the knee, and it is also licensed for use in the shoulder and hip. While the effect may not be immediate, most patients experience a gradual improvement in pain and stiffness lasting several months.

i.

Knee Osteoarthritis

The most extensively studied indication. Ostenil Plus can ease persistent knee pain, improve mobility and delay or avoid the need for surgical intervention in suitable patients.

ii.

Shoulder Osteoarthritis

Helpful for stiffness and pain affecting daily activities. Ultrasound guidance ensures the medication is placed precisely within the glenohumeral joint.

iii.

Hip Osteoarthritis

The deeper anatomy of the hip makes ultrasound guidance especially valuable, allowing accurate, comfortable delivery of Ostenil Plus directly to the joint space.

Procedure & Patient Information

Safety, side effects & aftercare

A well-tolerated, naturally-derived therapy

Ostenil Plus injections are widely regarded as safe, with no reported serious side effects. The solution contains no animal proteins, so the risk of an allergic reaction is very low. Treatment can be safely repeated when the effect of a previous injection wears off.

At Hinchley Medical, every injection is performed under live ultrasound guidance to maximise accuracy and minimise risk. The procedure is carried out in a strictly aseptic manner with sterile equipment in our CQC-registered facility.

Infection risk: As with any joint injection, there is a small infection risk (approximately 1 in 10,000). If you experience unexpected pain, warmth, redness around the area or develop a temperature, please contact your GP or attend A&E immediately and explain that you have recently had a joint injection.

What to look out for after treatment

Most patients tolerate Ostenil Plus injections extremely well. Some minor effects are possible and are typically short-lived:

  • Minor bruising at the site of the injection
  • Mild pain or swelling shortly after the procedure
  • Tendon or nerve irritation (rare, minimised by ultrasound guidance)
  • No measurable response to the treatment in some patients
  • Temporary worsening of symptoms before improvement begins
Your radiology consultant will review the benefits and risks with you in detail before the procedure and answer any questions you may have.

Contraindications to be aware of

Ostenil Plus is not suitable in the following circumstances. These will be reviewed during your consultation:

  • An active infection at or near the proposed injection site
  • A known allergy to local anaesthetic
  • An inflammatory joint disease (such as rheumatoid arthritis) — alternative treatments may be more appropriate
  • Pregnancy

Before any injection, our consultant radiologist will discuss the benefits and risks, review any contraindications, and ask you to sign an informed consent form before proceeding.

Recovery and aftercare

The treated area may begin to feel uncomfortable once the local anaesthetic wears off. We recommend resting the affected joint for 48 hours after the procedure to allow the medication to settle and to optimise outcomes.

For your safety and comfort, please arrange for a friend or family member to accompany you to the appointment or to drive you home. Driving immediately after a joint injection is not recommended, as your insurance may not be valid.

What to expect: You may not notice an immediate effect after your Ostenil Plus injection. Most patients experience a gradual improvement in pain and stiffness over the following weeks, with benefits typically lasting several months.

Frequently Asked

Questions answered

How quickly will I feel the benefit of an Ostenil Plus injection?+

Most patients do not feel an immediate effect. The benefits of Ostenil Plus build gradually over the following weeks as the hyaluronic acid restores joint lubrication. The improvement in pain and stiffness typically lasts several months, with many patients reporting sustained relief.

How is the injection different from a steroid injection?+

Steroid injections work primarily by suppressing inflammation and tend to provide faster pain relief that is often shorter in duration. Ostenil Plus restores hyaluronic acid in the joint, supporting lubrication and cartilage health. The effect is slower to develop but typically lasts longer. Our consultant will help you decide which option is more appropriate for your condition.

Do I need a referral for an Ostenil Plus injection?+

Yes. All ultrasound-guided injections require a referral. This can be arranged through your GP, physiotherapist or hospital therapist. If you do not have a referral, we can offer a discounted private GP appointment to assess your suitability and arrange one for you.

Can I drive home after the procedure?+

We strongly advise against driving immediately after an ultrasound-guided joint injection, as your motor insurance may not be valid following the procedure. Please arrange for someone to accompany you or drive you home.

Can the injection be repeated?+

Yes. Ostenil Plus injections can be safely repeated when the effect of a previous injection begins to wear off. Your consultant radiologist will recommend an appropriate interval based on your individual response and clinical picture.

Is the clinic accessible?+

Our clinic is located on the first floor of Woodside House and is accessed via one flight of stairs (no lift access). Our ultrasound and interventional services are available to patients aged 16 and over. If you have specific accessibility requirements, please contact us in advance and we will do our best to accommodate you.
