Why Regular Skin & Mole Checks Matter
Regular skin checks can significantly increase the chance of detecting melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma at an early, treatable stage. You may benefit from routine mole checks if you have:
- A large number of moles
- A personal or family history of skin cancer
- Fair or sun-sensitive skin
- A mole that is changing in size, shape, colour, or sensation
- A history of sunburn or sunbed use
At Hinchley Medical, we focus on early diagnosis and prevention. Our thorough approach ensures you receive clear answers, reassurance, and a medical plan tailored to your needs.
State-of-the-Art Dermatoscopic (Dermoscopic) Imaging
At Hinchley Medical, we use advanced dermatoscopes (dermoscope) and high-resolution imaging systems to examine the structure of moles and skin lesions in extraordinary detail. Dermatoscopy is far more accurate than the naked eye, allowing clinicians to identify early signs of melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, and other skin conditions long before they become visible externally.
This technology allows us to do the following:
- Irregular pigment patterns
- Subtle asymmetry
- Changes in vascular structure
- Early malignancy indicators
Every image captured forms part of your secure digital skin record, allowing accurate comparison over time.
Comprehensive Mole Mapping
Our full-body mole mapping service provides a complete photographic overview of your skin. Using professional medical-grade imaging equipment, we document all significant moles and lesions to track changes over time.
Mole mapping is especially valuable for individuals with many moles, a history of skin cancer, or dysplastic (atypical) moles. Benefits include:
- A complete digital record of your skin
- A baseline to detect new or changing lesions
- Early identification of new or changing lesions
- Improved early detection of melanoma
- A proactive, long-term skin surveillance plan
Each mole is analysed each lesion using dermatoscopy (dermoscopy) to ensure every mole is assessed thoroughly.

Frequently Asked Questions
We are often asked...
A skin check is a detailed medical examination of your skin, moles, and lesions to detect early signs of skin cancer or other abnormalities. At Hinchley Medical, all skin checks are doctor-led and use advanced dermatoscopic (dermoscopic) imaging for highly accurate assessment.
A mole check focuses specifically on assessing individual moles for suspicious changes, while a skin check examines your entire skin surface. During a mole check, our clinicians use dermatoscopy to analyse the internal structure of each mole in high detail.
Mole mapping is a full-body photographic record of your skin, documenting all your moles and lesions. This digital map allows us to detect even the smallest changes between visits, making it one of the most effective tools for early melanoma detection.
Mole mapping is ideal if you have:Many molesA family or personal history of melanomaAtypical or dysplastic molesFair skin or high sun exposureA desire for long-term monitoring and reassurance
We use state-of-the-art dermatoscopic imaging and high-resolution digital photography. These tools allow clinicians to examine pigment patterns, vascular structures, and early malignant features that cannot be seen with the naked eye.
A standard skin check typically takes 20–30 minutes. Mole mapping appointments take longer—usually 30–45 minutes—due to the additional full-body imaging.
Yes. You will receive a detailed explanation of your findings during your appointment. This includes mole analysis, risk assessment, and a personalised management plan.
If our doctor identifies a mole that requires further investigation, we will discuss your options immediately. This may include short-interval follow-up imaging, mole removal, or referral to dermatology or skin surgery for biopsy.
No. Skin checks, mole checks, and mole mapping are completely non-invasive and painless. If a mole needs to be removed for biopsy, this would be arranged separately.
Most people benefit from an annual skin check. If you have high-risk features (many moles, atypical moles, previous skin cancer, family history), a 6- or 12-month mole mapping review may be recommended.
Yes. If a mole needs removing for medical or diagnostic reasons, we can arrange mole excision with appropriate referral or in-clinic treatment depending on the case. Cosmetic mole removal may also be possible after clinical assessment.
Absolutely. All dermatoscopic images and mole map photographs are stored securely in your encrypted medical record, allowing safe and accurate comparison at future visits.
No referral is required. You can book a private skin check, mole check, or mole mapping appointment directly with Hinchley Medical.
Yes. Skin checks are suitable for all ages. Mole mapping is typically recommended for older teenagers and adults, depending on risk factors and clinical need.
