We offer both Mirena and Copper coils
Intrauterine devices, or coils, are small T-shaped devices placed into the uterus to provide long-term contraception. There are two main types available in the UK:
- The Mirena Coil (Hormonal IUS): This device slowly releases the hormone levonorgestrel to prevent pregnancy for up to eight years. It thickens cervical mucus, thins the uterine lining, and sometimes stops ovulation.
- The Copper Coil (Non-Hormonal IUD): This device contains copper, which is toxic to sperm, preventing fertilisation. It can last between five and ten years depending on the brand and offers hormone-free contraception.

Benefits of Doctor-Led Coil Fitting
Choosing a doctor-led coil fitting service ensures you receive the service from a clinician with the highest level of expertise to deal with every possible scenario:
- Discuss your contraceptive goals and medical history in detail.
- Explain the advantages and possible side effects of each coil type.
- Assess your suitability for the Mirena or Copper Coil.
- Carry out a gentle and professional fitting in a calm, supportive environment.
The Fitting Procedure
The fitting process is quick and straightforward, usually taking around 15–20 minutes.
After a short consultation, your doctor will perform a routine pelvic examination and carefully insert the coil into your uterus. You may experience mild cramping during the procedure, but this usually settles quickly.
Following the fitting, we recommend rest for the remainder of the day and advise that some light bleeding or period-like discomfort may occur for a few days.
Your doctor will schedule a follow-up review to ensure the coil is positioned correctly and that you’re feeling comfortable.
Benefits of the Mirena Coil
In addition to its contraceptive role, the Mirena coil offers several therapeutic benefits:
- Reduces heavy or painful periods (often used as a treatment for menorrhagia).
- Can help manage endometriosis-related symptoms.
- Carry out a gentle and professional fitting in a calm, supportive environment.
Many women experience lighter, shorter, or even absent periods after a few months of Mirena use.
The Copper Coil – Hormone-Free Protection
If you prefer non-hormonal contraception, the Copper IUD offers excellent protection while allowing your natural cycle to continue. It does not cause hormonal side effects, mood changes, or weight fluctuations. Some users notice heavier or longer periods initially, but these often settle after a few months. Fertility returns immediately after removal.
Coil Removal, Replacement, and Checks at Hinchley Medical
We offer a coil removal and replacement services, whether your device was fitted here or elsewhere. The coil can be removed at any time, restoring fertility immediately. We also provide coil position checks using examination or ultrasound referral where needed.

Frequently Asked Questions
We are often asked...
The Mirena coil is a hormonal intrauterine system (IUS) that releases a small amount of levonorgestrel to prevent pregnancy and reduce heavy periods. The Copper coil is non-hormonal and uses copper to prevent fertilisation. Both are over 99% effective, but the Mirena lasts up to 5 years, while the Copper coil can last up to 10 years.
Most people experience some mild discomfort or cramping during the fitting, similar to period pain. The procedure only takes a few minutes, and discomfort usually settles quickly. You can take paracetamol or ibuprofen beforehand if advised by your doctor.
The Copper coil works immediately after fitting.
The Mirena coil is effective straight away if fitted within the first 7 days of your period. If fitted at another time, you’ll need additional contraception (e.g. condoms) for 7 days.
Yes. Both the Mirena and Copper coils are suitable for women whether or not they have had children. Your doctor will discuss your individual needs and ensure the correct size and type are chosen for you.
The full appointment usually lasts around 20 minutes. The fitting itself takes only a few minutes, followed by a short recovery period and aftercare advice from your doctor.
Mild cramping, light bleeding, or spotting are common for a few days after fitting. With the Mirena coil, some women notice irregular bleeding for the first 3–6 months before periods often become lighter. With the Copper coil, periods may be slightly heavier initially but usually settle over time.
We recommend checking the coil threads monthly, after your period, to ensure it’s still in place. Your doctor will also arrange a follow-up review after fitting to confirm positioning and discuss any concerns.
Yes. You can have the coil removed whenever you wish. Fertility returns almost immediately after removal, so if you do not want to become pregnant, another form of contraception should be used straight away.
Yes. The Mirena coil can be used as part of Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) to protect the womb lining and is generally safe alongside most other medications. Your doctor will review your medical history to ensure suitability.
It is uncommon, but occasionally the coil can move, especially soon after fitting. Regular self-checks of the threads and routine follow-up appointments help ensure the device remains correctly positioned.
If you cannot feel the threads, or if you experience pain, unusual bleeding, or suspect the coil has moved, contact Hinchley Medical promptly. Our doctors can perform an examination or arrange an ultrasound if needed.
You can book your consultation directly through our reception team or online. Our doctors will discuss your options, explain the fitting process, and ensure you receive safe, comfortable, and confidential contraceptive care.
