The Procedure

What Happens During a Private Smear Test?

Your cervical smear appointment at our Hinchley Wood clinic typically takes 10–15 minutes. Here's what to expect:

1

Consultation

Your doctor explains the procedure in full and answers any questions you may have about cervical screening or HPV testing.

2

Preparation

You are asked to undress from the waist down and lie comfortably on the examination couch in our private consultation room.

3

Speculum Insertion

A sterile speculum is gently inserted to visualise the cervix. Our clinicians take extra care to ensure your comfort throughout.

4

Cell Collection

A small, soft brush collects cells from the surface of the cervix — the procedure is quick and should not be painful.

5

Laboratory Analysis

Your sample is sent to an accredited laboratory for HPV testing and cytology analysis, with results typically available within 7–14 days.

Before Your Appointment

Preparing for Your Private Smear Test

To ensure the most accurate cervical screening results:

  • Avoid intercourse, vaginal creams, or douching for 48 hours before your appointment.
  • Try to schedule your test when you are not on your period for the clearest sample.
  • Bring details of any medications or previous cervical screening results.
  • Let us know if you have had difficult or painful examinations before — our clinicians will take extra time and care to support you.
Cervical Cancer Prevention

The Importance of Regular Cervical Screening

Regular cervical smear tests are one of the most effective ways to prevent cervical cancer. Most cases are linked to persistent infection with high-risk HPV types. By identifying HPV early, your clinician can monitor and treat abnormal cells before they develop into cancer.

Even if you have been vaccinated against HPV, regular screening remains essential. In many countries, cervical smear tests are recommended annually. Our private cervical screening service near Esher, Cobham, Oxshott, and Surbiton offers peace of mind, flexibility, and results you can trust.

Frequently Asked Questions

Cervical Smear Test FAQs

What is a private cervical smear test?

A private cervical smear test — also known as a Pap test — checks the health of the cervix by collecting a small sample of cells. The sample is tested for human papillomavirus (HPV) and abnormal cell changes that can lead to cervical cancer. At Hinchley Medical in Hinchley Wood, Surrey, tests are carried out by experienced doctors in a private, comfortable setting.

Why choose Hinchley Medical for a cervical smear near Esher or Cobham?

Hinchley Medical offers a doctor-led private cervical smear service with flexible appointment times, minimal waiting, and same-week availability. Located in Hinchley Wood, our clinic is easily accessible from Esher, Cobham, Oxshott, Surbiton, Hampton, and across South West London and Surrey. Patients benefit from calm, professional care and fast access to HPV and cytology results from accredited laboratories.

How long does a private smear test take?

The cervical smear test itself takes approximately 10–15 minutes. Your full appointment, including consultation and preparation, usually lasts around 20 minutes at our Hinchley Wood clinic.

When will I receive my results?

Results from your private cervical smear test are typically available within 7 to 14 days. Our team will contact you securely with a clear explanation of your results and any recommended follow-up steps.

Is a cervical smear test painful?

Most people experience only mild discomfort during a cervical smear test. The procedure is quick and should not be painful. If you feel anxious or have had previous difficulties, our clinicians will take extra care to ensure you are comfortable throughout your appointment.

Does a smear test check for sexually transmitted infections?

No — a cervical smear test checks for HPV and abnormal cervical cells, not for STIs. However, you can request STI screening alongside your smear at Hinchley Medical for complete peace of mind.

How often should I have a cervical smear test?

The recommended frequency depends on your age, medical history, and HPV results. Most women are screened every three to five years. Your clinician at Hinchley Medical will advise a schedule tailored to your personal needs.

Can I book a private cervical smear if I'm not due on the NHS?

Yes. You can book a private cervical smear test at Hinchley Medical at any time, regardless of your NHS recall date. This is ideal if you prefer flexible timing, are travelling abroad, or simply want additional reassurance about your cervical health.
