Private Cervical Smear Tests at Hinchley Medical

At Hinchley Medical, we offer fast, discreet, and clinically led private cervical smear tests for women and people with a cervix who want convenient access to high-quality screening.

Our cervical smear service uses the same laboratory-validated methods as the NHS cervical screening programme but with the added flexibility, comfort, and personalised care of a private clinic.

A cervical smear test (also known as cervical cytology or Pap test) checks the health of the cervix by collecting a small sample of cells to look for early changes caused by human papillomavirus (HPV). Detecting these changes early helps prevent cervical cancer before it develops.

The Procedure

What Happens During a Cervical Smear Test?

Your private smear test at Hinchley Medical Private GP and Specialist Clinics will take approximately 10-15 minutes.

  • Our expert doctor will explain the procedure and answer any questions.
  • You will be asked to undress from the waist down and lie comfortably on the examination couch.
  • A sterile speculum is gently inserted to view the cervix.
  • A small, soft brush collects cells from the surface of the cervix.
  • The sample is sent to an accredited laboratory for HPV testing and cytology analysis.

The procedure is quick, and while some people experience mild discomfort, it should not be painful. Our clinicians take extra care to ensure a relaxed and respectful experience.

Your Results

Understanding Your Results

Results are usually available within 7–14 days, depending on the laboratory. We will contact you securely and explain your results clearly:

  • Normal or HPV-negative: Continue routine screening as advised.
  • HPV-positive but normal cells: We will arrange follow-up screening or monitoring if you have private medical insurance or wish to fund your ongoing treatment, or hand over your care to your NHS GP to refer you via the NHS system is preferred.
  • Abnormal cells: Further assessment, such as colposcopy, will be arranged promptly privately or via the NHS if preferred

At Hinchley Medical Private GP and Specialist Clinics, your follow-up care is fully managed by our clinical team, with onward referral to NHS or private gynaecology services if needed.

Preparing for your test

Preparing for Your Private Smear Test

To ensure the most accurate results:

  • Avoid intercourse, vaginal creams, or douching for 48 hours before your appointment.
  • Try to schedule your test when you are not on your period.
  • Bring details of any medications or previous cervical screening results.
  • Let us know if you’ve had difficult or painful examinations before — our clinicians will take extra time and care to support you.
Regular Tests

The Importance of Regular Cervical Screening

Regular cervical smear tests are one of the most effective ways to prevent cervical cancer. Most cases are linked to persistent infection with high-risk HPV types. By identifying HPV early, we can monitor and treat any abnormal cells before they develop into cancer. In many countries cervical smear tests are undertaken annually. Even if you are vaccinated against HPV, you still need regular screening. Our private cervical cancer screening service in Hinchley provides peace of mind, flexibility, and results you can trust.

Why should I book my cervical smear test at Hinchley Medical?

Hinchley Medical offers a doctor-led private cervical smear service with flexible appointment times, minimal waiting, confidential results, and same-week availability. Patients benefit from calm, professional care and quick access to HPV and cytology results from accredited laboratories.
