About the Treatment

A single, well-judged injection — when nothing else has worked.

If your hay fever symptoms — relentless sneezing, streaming eyes, a blocked nose or that thick, unshakeable fatigue — are no longer responding to oral antihistamines, nasal corticosteroid sprays or topical drops, a Kenalog (triamcinolone) injection may offer the season-long relief you need.

At our private GP clinic in Hinchley Wood, just minutes from Esher, Cobham, Oxshott, Surbiton and Hampton, our doctors will take a careful history, assess whether the treatment is clinically appropriate for you, and explain every alternative — so the decision is fully informed and entirely yours.

Symptoms We Treat

The everyday misery of hay fever — addressed at the source.

Allergic rhinitis can disrupt sleep, concentration and quality of life. A Kenalog injection is designed to calm the inflammatory response that drives all of the symptoms below, simultaneously.

Persistent sneezing

Repeated sneezing fits triggered by tree, grass or weed pollen.

Itchy, watery eyes

Allergic conjunctivitis with redness, swelling and burning.

Runny nose

Constant rhinorrhoea — the kind tissues simply can't keep up with.

Nasal congestion

Blocked sinuses, pressure behind the eyes and disrupted sleep.

Itchy throat & palate

That maddening, unscratchable tickle at the back of the throat.

Brain fog & fatigue

Tiredness and reduced concentration from chronic inflammation.

A Considered Choice

Benefits and trade-offs — laid out plainly.

Steroid injections for hay fever are not for everyone. Our role is to help you weigh the evidence and decide what's right for your circumstances.

What patients value

  • Convenience of a single dose covering most of the pollen season — no daily tablets, sprays or drops to remember
  • Fast, comprehensive symptom control across nose, eyes, throat and energy levels
  • Improved sleep, concentration and outdoor activity for those with severe allergic rhinitis
  • Particularly helpful for patients facing exams, weddings, holidays or important work events during peak pollen months
  • An option for those who have not tolerated, or not responded to, conventional therapies and who cannot access immunotherapy

Considerations & risks

  • As with any corticosteroid, there are recognised systemic effects to consider — your doctor will discuss these in full
  • Allergy UK no longer endorses these injections; we respect that position and use them selectively, never routinely
  • Not appropriate during pregnancy, breastfeeding, or with certain conditions including poorly controlled diabetes
  • Alternatives — including newer antihistamines, intranasal combination sprays and immunotherapy — should be considered first
  • Once given, the effect cannot be reversed; the dose remains active for several weeks
Our promise of transparency. At Hinchley Medical we will only offer a hay fever injection where it is clinically appropriate and where reasonable alternatives have been explored. We discuss the pros and cons openly, document our advice clearly, and respect every patient's right to a fully informed decision.

Frequently Asked

Questions our patients ask most often.

Most patients notice a meaningful reduction in symptoms within 24 to 72 hours of their Kenalog (triamcinolone) injection. The effect typically lasts up to three months — generally enough to cover the most intense weeks of the UK pollen season.

When prescribed selectively to appropriately assessed adults, Kenalog injections have been used safely for many years. As with any corticosteroid, there are recognised potential side effects — both local and systemic — which your GP will explain in full before treatment. We only recommend the injection when it is clinically justified and other reasonable options have been considered.

Allergy UK has withdrawn its endorsement on the basis that systemic steroid exposure is generally undesirable and that other treatments — including immunotherapy — should be tried first. We agree these alternatives should be the default. However, many patients in Surrey and South West London either cannot access immunotherapy promptly or have found oral and topical treatments ineffective. For that group, a one-off injection can offer genuine relief, and we believe the choice should remain available — provided the decision is fully informed.

Pricing includes the doctor's consultation, the medication and aftercare guidance. Please contact our reception team on 020 8398 1688 or via email for the most current fee, as prices are reviewed periodically.

Hinchley Medical is located in Hinchley Wood, Esher, Surrey — easily reached by car or by direct train from Surbiton, Hampton, Kingston and central South West London. Patients travel to us from Esher, Cobham, Oxshott, Surbiton, Hampton, Weybridge, Claygate, Thames Ditton and the wider Surrey region.

No referral is required. As a private GP clinic, we accept self-referrals — simply call, email or use our online booking form. We will, with your permission, write to your NHS GP afterwards so that your records remain joined-up.

Kenalog is generally not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. We will discuss alternative, safer approaches to managing your symptoms during your consultation.

For most patients, a stepwise approach is best: regular non-sedating antihistamines, intranasal corticosteroid sprays (often combined with antihistamine sprays), eye drops, and — for persistent severe disease — sublingual or subcutaneous immunotherapy. Your GP at Hinchley Medical will help you map out the right sequence for your symptoms.
